Why Victim Services?
On November 4, 2008 , the voters of the State of California approved Proposition 9, the Victim’s Bill of Rights Act of 2008, also Known as Marsy’s Law. This law became effective November 5, 2008 and applies “in all matters which arise and to all proceedings held after the effective date of this act”
A “victim” is defined as a person who suffers direct or threatened physical, psychological, or financial harm as a result of the commission or attempted commission of a crime or delinquent act.
The purpose of Proposition 9 is to provide crime victims with rights to justice and due process, including the right to reasonable notice and to be heard during critical stages of the justice system, and the right to a speedy and just punishment of the person who committed the crime. Proposition 9 also amends Section 28 or Article 1 of the California Constitution, which was originally enacted as part of Proposition 8, and adds a number of victim rights to the California Constitution.
I pledge to you that we will do everything possible to ensure that you get the services you except and deserve. Our goal here is to bring into better balance the weighty rights of criminals with the rights of our crime victims. The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office will continue to make sure all victims of crime are aware of their rights and to ensure that these rights are enforced.
Thank you,
Jeff W. Reisig
