(Woodland, CA) – November 1, 2019 On October 21, 2019, the Honorable Judge Janene Beronio of the Yolo County Superior Court sentenced 37 year-old Sacramento man, Charles Wayne Caldwell, to 16 years in state prison after his conviction for human trafficking.

On July 10, 2018, Caldwell was arrested by the West Sacramento Police Department for domestic violence, possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia, as well as failing to update his sex offender registration. The adult victim reported that Caldwell had whipped her with a belt leaving an injury, that was still visible days later, while the two were staying in a motel on West Capitol Avenue, in West Sacramento.

West Sacramento Police Detectives and Investigators from the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office Human Trafficking Unit continued the investigation discovering evidence that Caldwell was involved in human trafficking, pimping, and pandering in addition to the original charges. Throughout the investigation the victim disclosed multiple incidents of abuse leading to injuries at the hands of Caldwell. The victim was forced to perform commercial sex acts in West Sacramento, Sacramento, and the bay area.

On August 16, 2019, Charles Caldwell pled no contest to one charge of human trafficking and admitted a prior strike offense. Caldwell has a violent past with a history of victimizing vulnerable women.

Following the sentencing Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig praised the efforts of the West Sacramento Police Department as well as the work of his own investigators stating, “We are committed to combating the pervasive issue of human trafficking in Yolo County.”
