Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – September 19, 2022 – On September 17, 2022, in an effort to deter would-be thieves and to track stolen catalytic converters, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office and the Davis Police Department teamed up with Hanlees Toyota for Operation Etch and Catch. This community safety event offered FREE etching of vehicle’s license plate number onto owner’s catalytic converters. Doing so will help reduce the number of thefts of catalytic converters.

Thieves steal catalytic converters because they contain small amounts of precious metals. When thieves see the painted markings and engraved license plate number, this will hopefully deter them to leave your car alone. If they are bold enough to still steal your catalytic converter, then law enforcement or a scrap yard will be able to recognize the catalytic converter as stolen, based on the markings. The markings will assist the police in identifying victims of theft, and aid in prosecution of offenders. As a deterrent, area scrap yards should be aware of a catalytic converter with these markings, or evidence of the markings being partially or completely removed. Future Etch and Catch events are in progress.
