June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – June 1, 2022 – Tonight there will be a candlelight vigil in Davis for National Gun Violence Awareness Month, which occurs every June. Also, Gun Violence National Awareness Day falls on the first Friday of June, which is June 3rd this year. This is also known as the “Wear Orange Day,” and was founded in an effort to honor survivors and victims of gun violence. “Wear Orange Day” originated on June 2, 2015, on what would have been the 18th birthday of Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago, on January 29, 2013. She was only 15 years old and had just a week earlier performed at Obama’s second presidential inauguration. Not long after Pendleton passed, her childhood friends began to wear orange as a tribute and commemoration of her life, as the color orange is what hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.

Tonight’s vigil will honor the victims of the recent tragedies in Uvalde, TX, and Buffalo, NY, and all lives lost to gun violence in our nation, which is estimated to be 30 lives every day. The vigil will be held at the Davis Central Park, located at 5th & B Streets in Davis, CA, at will begin at 8:30pm.
