The Ninth Annual Crime Victims’ Tribute  – April 20, 2015

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – April 16, 2015 – Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig and Yolo County District Attorney Victim Services Program will recognize victims’ rights at their Ninth Annual Crime Victims’ Tribute on April 20, 2015. Yolo County crime victims, community leaders, victim advocates, prosecutors, law enforcement and service professionals will again join together the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office to recognize victims’ rights and the devastating impact crime has on victims, schools, neighborhoods, and our nation as a whole. The keynote address will be given by Victoria Hurd, a survivor of crime, whose parents were brutally murdered in April of 2013 by Daniel Marsh.

Jeff Reisig and Yolo County Victim Services will be acknowledging four individuals or families who have survived through tragic and heartbreaking events. The honorees include:

A new mother whose home was crashed into by a car driven by a parolee who was evading police. She sustained life-threatening medical complications and was fortunate to survive after surgery. She was cooperative with prosecution even though she was afraid of retaliation.

A survivor of domestic violence who didn’t want police involvement and didn’t testify at an initial hearing because the abuser convinced her not to show up. Although still in love with the defendant, she found courage to testify about the physical and emotional abuse at the jury trial and her abuser was sentenced to prison.

A woman who was shocked to find a male exposing himself to her at her apartment complex. Despite her fear of the suspect, she was cooperative with law enforcement at all stages of the process.

A hate crime survivor who was brutally beaten after his birthday party in Davis. He sustained numerous injuries, hospitalization and many months of rehabilitative therapy. Although the assault affected him physically and emotionally, he came to every court date with his family and was very involved in holding the assailant accountable.

The Ninth Annual Crime Victims’ Tribute will be held at Woodland Opera House, 340 Second Street in Woodland on April 20, 2015 from 12 noon to 12:50 pm. The public is welcome and encouraged to join the DA’s office for this important tribute event.
