(Woodland, CA) – November 13, 2023 – On November 7, 2023, Mebrahtu Tsehai, a 42-year-old resident of Oakland, was convicted by a Yolo County jury for Petty Theft, which was committed at Nugget Market in Davis, CA. Tsehai walked out of the store with a grocery cart full of mostly alcohol, valued at $570.13. Tsehai had a prior misdemeanor and a prior felony conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm, as well as a felony conviction for assault on a prison employee.

The theft was initially reported by a Nugget Loss Prevention Agent. The Loss Prevent Agent detained Tsehai until an officer with the Davis Police Department arrived.

The trial took place before the Honorable Judge Tom Dyer. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Nicholas Spatola. Sentencing is scheduled for November 30, 2023, before Judge Dyer. Tsehai faces up to six months in jail and one year probation.

District Attorney Jeff Reisig commented. “Our office has always taken retail theft cases seriously. These offenses harm our local businesses and the quality of life for everyone, and consumers end up paying for these losses in the end.
